Chairman

Sandy 2Sandy Welton is Morehead’s founder and chairman. When he started Morehead as a broad-based human resources consulting firm more than 30 years ago, his motivation was to create engaged employees that would propel organizations to success. Later, he realized the importance of managers having data to inform their decisions. This need for data created Morehead’s entry into employee opinion surveys. This decision was the first of two pivotal decisions in Morehead’s direction. The second decision occurred years later when Sandy, then president, began focusing on the healthcare industry. He felt there was no more noble industry that Morehead could serve.

The values Sandy has instilled in Morehead as its founder have shaped Morehead into the organization it is today. Those values can be summed up in a statement he made to employees: “Have fun, work hard, continue learning, be creative, be trustworthy, respect your colleagues, and take care of your customers. That should do it.”

Prior to founding Morehead, he worked for First Union Bank as Director of Career and Leadership Development. In addition, he worked 10 years in the non-profit world. This work included the National Urban Training Center in New York, where he focused on the problems of inner city youth. His non-profit work also included co-founding the Vietnamese Children’s Fund, which addressed the medical needs of civilian casualties during the Vietnam War. Sandy has always been active in the community, having served as chairman of the Charlotte Chamber Music’s Board of Directors, chairman of the Advisory Board for Self Help Credit Union, and a board member of the Bruce Irons Camp Fund and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. Sandy holds a Master of Science in clinical psychology.
